Haramain High-Speed Railway Overview

The Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR) is a passenger railway line connecting the Mecca and Medina provinces in western Saudi Arabia. The 449.2-kilometer (279.1-mile) main line directly links the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina, passing through Jeddah and the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC). A 3.75-kilometer (2.33-mile) branch line connects to the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. The railway began public operations on October 11, 2018

Construction and Costs
The HHR project began in March 2009 and faced delays, ultimately opening six years later than initially planned. The total contract value was approximately $9.4 billion.
Design and Structure
The Saudi Railways Organization commissioned Dar Al-Handasah for the concept design and construction supervision. The design included:

One cut-and-cover tunnel
46 rail bridges, 9 wadi bridges
5 rail underpasses, 53 vehicular overpasses
30 vehicular underpasses, 12 camel crossings
5 stations and 3 depots

The double-track line is electrified and built to withstand temperatures from 0°C (32°F) to 50°C (122°F).

Mecca to Jeddah: 77 kilometers (48 miles) in 43 minutes at an average speed of 107 km/h (66 mph).
Mecca to Medina: 449 kilometers (279 miles) in approximately 2 hours.
Capacity and Rolling Stock
The railway is expected to transport 60 million passengers annually on 35 trains, each with a seating capacity of 417. Talgo supplied 36 Talgo 350 SRO trains under the Phase II construction contract, including one train equipped with a hybrid coach pair for VIPs.
